Your overheating is a little worrisome, but hopefully you were able to stop before any serious damage was done. My car runs fine now with no ill effects and I have the peace of mind regarding the reoccurence of the crossover tube crack. Pictures and tagging the parts definitely is a plus for helping put things back in the correct places. It took me a full weekend to do the job, but it's not technically hard there are just a lot of things attached to the manifold that you have to remove and of course later re-attach. The new manifold was $279 and, by the way, Ford is now making the coolant crossover tube out of aluminum. That was definitely not in my budget, so I decided to do it myself. I called a Ford dealer to get a ballpark on repair costs and they told me it would be $700 to $800 to replace the manifold. I'm not aware of any other way to diagnose the problem except for having a cooling system pressure check done. Upon real close inspection I finally saw the dreaded crack. It wasn't until after shutting the engine off and watching closely that I was finally able to see a little moisture accumulating along the seam line of the crossover tube at the front of the intake manifold. After it reached operating temp, I saw some steam, but couldn't pin down its origin because the cooling fan blew it away so quickly. The only way I pinned down the leak was to refill the cooling system, let the car idle in the driveway until hot and watch the engine. If yours cracked while driving in the rain, you might not have noticed the steam cloud because it was masked by the normal road spray that follows our cars while driving on very wet pavement. It took me two days plus pouring through old posts on this forum to figure out that it was the intake manifold. Fortunately, it was a very cold night so I didn't overheat and was able to make it the two miles home with no problem.Īt first I thought it was a blown radiator or heater hose, but I couldn't find any. The only symptom was the huge cloud of steam following my car. Last month the intake manifold on my '96 Vic failed while accelerating onto a local highway. #37868 - 03/04/02 10:57 AM Re: What are the symptoms of Intake Manifold Failure? Ill be getting my car in the shop later today. So, since the search is not working, are these the symptoms of a failed intake manifold? or could it be something else? Now, this morning i noticed before school that i had NO engine coolant! i had topped it off about a month agao, and i have no apperant leaks.that ive sceen in my drive way. I let everything dry out for a day and attempted to drive it again, i still have the same problem. I did not think anything of it untill 2 miles later my check engine light started Flashing! I pulled over, opened the hood and looked around, kinda wet, but nothing out of the normal.Īs i was pulling away, my engine began to run rough! almost as if i was running on 4-6cyl. I was driving during a large storm last weekend and went through a puddle which caused me to hydroplane. Original thread title: "What are the symptoms of Intake Manifold Failure?"
